I read a great article from a guy in the U.K. called "Bonfire of the Brands" (
link) on the BBC website. Okay, I'm a pretty nerdy guy, never all that big on wearing big-name fashions. In fact, my brother and dad have pretty much kept me in style the past ten years. So I was really impressed with this article.
If you didn't read it yet, I'll summarize it for you. The writer -- Neil Boorman -- started buying brand-names as a youngster and found himself hooked on the noteriety it got him. In the search for acceptance, he lost himself. To find himself, Neil plans to burn his brand-name goods and go no-brand.
This is pretty cool. You guys know we all have some inkling to get the fancy clothes and goods to impress others. Some people find it more necessary than others. Neil wrote, "In this secular society of ours, where family and church once gave us a sense of belonging, identity and meaning, there is now Apple, Mercedes and Coke." How sad, but accurate.
Jesus said,
19"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:19-21)

Mike, finish another dozen articles like these and you could start your own booklet of devotionals! Seriously. Hey if you're up for it, I'll come and light some of your shoes on fire for you! But then again, you've got to keep those Gucci heels (nice branch site btw!)

Good points Brian. I got to thinking about the Amish. There's a group in a fashion warp. It's cool to be able to enjoy nice things, but Niel's struggle was in finding his identity apart from fashion.
