The New IE

Last week I finally downloaded the new Internet Explorer 7. I put this off for months. These upgrades sometimes end up biting you in the rear - especially with Microsoft products. Sometimes they don't work so well with existing. Nevertheless, I gave it a shot. So, to my friends debating whether to upgrade, here are my observations.

The new IE has a sleeker look and powerful tools for users who use the web a lot. My favorite so far is the RSS feed window. It's simple to subscribe to blogs and news feeds and read them in a snap. There are other tools that intergrate with programs I have on my PC (Yahoo Messenger, Real Player, etc.). The next-best feature is tabbed browsing. Surfing without opening new browser windows is wonderful.

There are negatives. Some pages don't show up correctly. For some reason the guys at Microsoft don't abide by the standards most of the web community tries to use so we all enjoy the internet. So, when a website looks funky that looked great on IE 6, don't blame the website designer. Also, there's a fairly steep learning curve learning the new featues and layout.

All-in-all, IE 7 looks pretty good and works well enough. I will keep playing with it because that's what I do. But it's probably not for the novice or person who is very comfortable just suefing as is. This version of IE is a lot like the Mozilla Firefox browser. I use it a lot and recommend it before IE 7. But all of that's up to you.

What do you think?

Update: I've reverted to IE 6. After playing with 7 a while, I realized most folks still use 6 and it's not worth the frustrations for now. Maybe next year.
