Reflections on Castaway

Castaway is an amazing movie. Tonight, I'm watching it again on ABC. Chuck (Tom Hanks) hangs on to hope against hope waiting for something. Four years he lived on an island, "helpless" and escapes the island, losing his one friend, and makes it home, only to lose his love.

Chuck's love, Kelli, laments, "you were supposed to come right back" in a sad reflection on how she felt when he was lost at sea in a plane crash. Kelli moved on with her life, getting married and having a child. She's torn when her true love comes back, but stays with her family.

Chuck learns that life is beyond his control. He opines that he will take what the wind blows in. Like Chuck, we can try controlling life -- driving things our way, but we all meet unexpected turns. My biggest unexpected turn was paralysis. That one event reshaped the rest of my life.

What about you?

I still think Chuck should have been content and realized what a true friend he had in Wilson on the island. I don't remember Wilson ever saying he wanted to leave. But no, the movie was all about Chuck and what Chuck wanted. Stupid, filthy hobbit. Discontentment is simply a path which leads to misery. Chuck got what he deserved.

Shoot. I can't undo my previous comment! :) I made a typo - "Stupid, filthy hobbit" is supposed to be "Stupid, fat hobbit"

Tom Hanks was incredible in that movie!
My life really hasn't had any unexpected turns. Not much that I didn't see coming. Only two things that I am able to separate into "before" and "after." One - Christ making me a new creation. Two - my grandfather's illness and death.
