Edward Winslow

American Minute for October 18th: Pilgrim leader Edward Winslow was born this day, October 18, 1595. He was English agent for the Plymouth Colony and served as their Governor three separate terms, successfully making friendship with Indian chief, Massasoit. He later returned to England and served Oliver Cromwell in the English Civil War. In writing of the Pilgrims' experiences, Edward Winslow recounted: "Drought and the like...moved not only every good man privately to enter into examination with his own estate between God and his conscience, and so to humiliation before Him, but also to humble ourselves together before the Lord by fasting and prayer."
